Maui Horseback Riding Tours
Horseback riding has been an important and influential part of
Hawaiian life since the early 1800s when a sailor named John Parker
settled on the island and was given permission to capture wild cattle.
This cowboy and horseback riding lifestyle in Hawaii developed its own
unique style and method, giving Hawaiian cowboys the distinct name of
"paniolo." One of the unique aspects of the paniolo included their
methods of capturing wild cattle. They would dig a hole in the forest
floor and chase the cattle to the hole and release the horse when it
became tame and somewhat domesticated. The system developed when King
Liholiho's brother visited California and returned with newly learned
methods of taming and working with cattle and
horses.
