 Haleakala  has been an important part of Maui’s  environment, cultural identity, and even scientific explorations. Early Maui inhabitants named referred to just the summit as  Haleakala, which meant “house of the sun.” Hawaii  mythology and folklore believed the depression at the Haleakala summit to be  the home of the demigod Maui’s grandmother. Maui’s grandmother had a role in helping the demigod to  capture the sun in order to lengthen the hours of sunlight. Today, this summit  is used for astrophysical research purposes.
